Sunrise is relevant to the AI agent ecosystem because it provides the essential data availability (DA) layer required for autonomous agents to operate on-chain. In the history of software, modularity is often the winning play for scaling. The blockchain industry is currently undergoing a structural shift from monolithic architectures—where one chain handles execution, settlement, and data storage—to a modular stack where these functions are decoupled. Sunrise is a specialized player in this transition, focusing exclusively on the 'Data Availability' (DA) layer. For the uninitiated, the DA problem is simple: for a network to be decentralized, every participant must be able to download and verify the data that supports the current state of the chain. As transaction volumes grow, this becomes prohibitively expensive on traditional networks like Ethereum.

Sunrise is building a substrate for this modular future. While competitors like Celestia pioneered the idea of making data a commodity, Sunrise differentiates itself through a technical mechanism called proof of liquidity. This approach attempts to solve the cold-start problem of securing a new DA layer by linking network security to the liquidity of the ecosystem. By ensuring that data is both available and verifiable without forcing every node to download the entire history, Sunrise creates a high-throughput 'bulletin board' that other applications can use to prove their own operations are valid.

Infrastructure for the agentic web

While DA layers are often discussed in the context of financial transactions, their real long-term utility may lie in supporting autonomous agents. AI agents operating on-chain require a persistent, verifiable memory. If an agent executes a sequence of trades or manages a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), its decision-making logs and state updates need to be recorded somewhere that is both tamper-proof and affordable. Monolithic Layer 1 networks are too expensive for the high-frequency state updates required by an active AI agent.

Sunrise provides the cost-effective storage layer necessary for these 'agentic' workflows. By offloading data to a specialized layer, developers can build agents that have the security of a blockchain without the overhead of the Mainnet. This allows for a more complex 'memory' for agents, enabling them to store large datasets of previous interactions or environmental states that can be cryptographically verified by other parts of the modular stack.

Competitive market dynamics

Sunrise enters a market that is already beginning to consolidate. Celestia is the first-mover, having defined the category, while Avail (spun out of Polygon) and EigenDA (utilizing EigenLayer's restaking) are the other primary contenders. Sunrise's success depends on its ability to attract liquidity through its proof-of-liquidity model, incentivizing developers to choose its layer over those with larger existing brand equity. The tradeoff for modularity is complexity; builders must now manage multiple integrations rather than a single chain. Sunrise is betting that the efficiency gains of its proof-of-liquidity model will outweigh these integration costs, providing a more sustainable foundation for the next generation of decentralized autonomous systems.
