Among them is AmanPay, a payment gateway that has spent the last decade navigating the friction of North African commerce. Founded in 2013 by Mourad Mekouar, the company arrived at a time when digital payments in the Maghreb were nascent and consumer trust in online transactions was low.

At its core, AmanPay is a horizontal payment gateway. It provides the technical rails for merchants to accept credit cards and other digital payment methods through a unified API. This API-first approach was a departure from the more cumbersome, bank-integrated systems that preceded it in the Moroccan market. By focusing on rapid integration and mobile readiness, the company targeted the first wave of regional e-commerce startups that needed to move faster than traditional banking infrastructure allowed.

Market dynamics and localization

The Moroccan market presents a specific set of challenges for any payment processor. Cash remains the dominant medium for exchange, and the logistics of cash-on-delivery have historically hampered the growth of pure-play digital commerce. AmanPay has maintained its position by operating as a local specialist. While global platforms often struggle with local currency regulations and regional bank interoperability, AmanPay's infrastructure is built specifically for these constraints.

In recent years, the brand has seen expansion or licensing of its model into other emerging markets, most notably Iraq. The Iraqi entity, operating under the same name, functions as a digital wallet for the consumer market. This dual existence as a B2B gateway in Morocco and a B2C wallet in Iraq reflects the fragmented nature of fintech in the MENA region. In both cases, the objective is the same: digitizing the flow of capital in environments where traditional banking has failed to keep pace with mobile penetration.

Competitive position and the programmatic shift

AmanPay occupies a middle ground between the state-backed payment switches and the new wave of venture-backed super-apps. In Morocco, it competes with the Centre Monétique Interbancaire (CMI), the dominant player owned by a consortium of banks. AmanPay's advantage has traditionally been its agility and ease of use for developers. It does not attempt to be a consumer-facing financial giant; instead, it provides the invisible pipes that allow other businesses to function.

As the region moves toward more automated commerce, the role of these pipes is changing. The shift from manual checkout screens to programmatic payment triggers is the next frontier for the company. While they have remained an unfunded, independent entity for over a decade, their survival in a market that has seen many competitors fold is a result of this focus on essential infrastructure rather than speculative growth.
