Role in the agent ecosystem

Alchemy is essential for AI agents that interact with blockchains. For an agent to be truly autonomous on-chain, it needs a reliable way to query the state of the world, a wallet it can control without human intervention, and a mechanism to pay for its own compute. Alchemy provides all three. Their account abstraction and Smart Wallet tools are particularly relevant, as they allow agents to manage assets and execute transactions programmatically while abstracting away the complexities of gas management via their Paymaster API.

Within the agent ecosystem, Alchemy acts as the connectivity layer. If an LLM-based agent wants to buy an NFT or swap tokens on a decentralized exchange, it must use an infrastructure provider like Alchemy to submit that transaction. As agents move toward becoming 'autonomous economic actors,' Alchemy’s role in providing secure, programmable wallet infrastructure makes them a primary enabler of the on-chain agent stack.

About

The infrastructure layer for the on-chain economy

Alchemy is the platform layer for the blockchain ecosystem. While many firms in the crypto space focus on end-user applications like exchanges or marketplaces, Alchemy builds the pipes. Their core product is a suite of APIs and developer tools that allow software to interact with various blockchains—including Ethereum, Solana, and Polygon—without requiring the developer to run and maintain their own server nodes. This position has made them the default infrastructure choice for major fintech players like Visa and Circle.

The company is led by Nikil Viswanathan and Joe Lau, Stanford graduates who previously built the viral social app Down To Lunch. Since its founding in 2017, Alchemy has raised over $500 million in venture capital, reaching a valuation of $10 billion. Their thesis is that blockchain technology is currently in its 'pre-AWS' phase, where the difficulty of building infrastructure is the primary bottleneck for new applications. By providing reliable access to block data and transaction execution, they aim to commoditize the backend of decentralization.

Moving from nodes to orchestration

Technically, Alchemy is more than a simple RPC (Remote Procedure Call) provider. Their proprietary engine, Cortex, acts as an abstraction layer between the developer and the raw blockchain. It handles the nuances of data consistency, chain re-organizations, and throughput scaling. This is particularly relevant for high-volume users who cannot afford downtime or 'stale' data, which can be a frequent issue when interacting with public peer-to-peer networks.

Recently, the product focus has shifted from mere data retrieval to wallet orchestration and user onboarding. Their Smart Wallet and Account Abstraction tools allow developers to embed custodial or non-custodial wallets directly into applications. This includes features like gas sponsorship, where an application pays the transaction fees on behalf of the user. This functionality is a prerequisite for mainstream adoption, as it removes the requirement for users to hold native tokens just to interact with a digital service.

Competitive position and scale

Alchemy sits in a direct competitive rivalry with Infura, the ConsenSys-owned service that historically dominated the Ethereum developer market. While Infura has deep roots in the Ethereum community, Alchemy has differentiated itself by aggressively supporting a multi-chain strategy and building a broader toolset for data indexing and transaction simulation. Other competitors like QuickNode and Moralis offer similar node services, but Alchemy has managed to secure a dominant market share by focusing on enterprise-grade reliability and SLAs.

The scale of their operation is significant, reportedly facilitating over $4 trillion in annual transaction volume. Their customer base spans from individual developers on a free tier to large-scale enterprises on custom contracts. By providing a sandbox environment and Best-in-class debugging features, they have created a high-switching-cost environment for developers who rely on their specific API responses and webhooks to keep their applications functioning.
